It seems to take a long time for my thoughts to reach my pages... trying to put my thoughts into 'proper sentences' is probably slowing the process... so... as an experiment, I'm going to add thoughts in fragments... messy notes... more like the real thing!

... and updates to this page could appear anywhere on the page!

I only play with my computer on days that end in 'y'

There's a quote I like...
"Consider the Web a dancing bear.
The mere fact of its existence is remarkable; whether it waltzes is beside the point."

I'd like to think that we can try to teach the Web to 'dance' or 'waltz' by reducing the size of the files on our Web pages. I've mentioned the GIFWIZARD before... it was a free online utility to reduce the size of your GIFs... great for animations...

I checked the GIFWIZARD the other day... It's still there, but it's not free any more...

If I'm in the middle of a game when Chrissy wants me to do something, she'll say "you can pause it..." or ask if I can pause it if she doesn't already know... The other day she noticed I was on the Internet and laughingly asked, "Can you pause the Internet, Mum?"

When my mail got stuck in my mailbox - I couldn't collect it in Internet Mail or Netscape Mail - I managed to download it as a text file via FTP... but...

I couldn't read the attachments...

When I mentioned it to my 'Sydney son' he told me that if I moved the text file to the Netscape Mail directory (without giving it an extension) ... I should be able to read the messages...

It worked!.. and I could see the attachments too!

Pity it didn't work in Internet Mail... Apparently it's because Internet Mail 'insists' on doing something 'funny' to the file when it receives it... and so can't read one which hasn't been 'tampered with'...

It's happened several more times! I've received answers to email within an hour of sending them... all the way from America and Canada!

Speaking of America... I have a mixture of spelling on my pages... from now on I will spell Australian! but... I might not 'fix' what I've already written...

be thankful there is no Dutch spelling :)

I have my reasons for not adding MIDi files to my pages... but a few weeks ago my girls wanted some sound on their pages....

Time to read some source code to see how it's done...

A lot of pages use two commands... now I know why a MIDi starts playing in Internet Explorer, and then tells me it can't start!!! It's trying to 'obey two masters'...

Someone told me that both commands are used to allow for the two main browsers... The BGSOUND command doesn't work in Netscape... and the EMBED command doesn't work in Explorer. Each browser supposedly uses one and ignores the other...

In real life however... Internet Explorer - as set up on my computer, anyway - tries to 'obey' both...

Taking out the BGSOUND and leaving only the EMBED works on my computer with my browser the way it is now... even the stereo controls work! but... does it work because I also have Netscape installed??? Or because of some Plug-in?

BGSOUND needs to be near the top of the file as it is part of the body.... and... If a background graphic is called but not found... the music doesn't play? or not more than a few notes...?

EMBED can be placed elsewhere in the file...

Kate's page now has a MIDi file... with the EMBED command only... If you have time, maybe you could check it out and write to me... tell me if it works... and which version of which browser you're using...

Chrissy's Super Simpsons page has a WAV file with both commands... and on my setup the sound is played twice... once for each command... and there is a 'control'... put there by a Plug-in????

Now Kate wants scrolling text in the Status Bar! Talk about keeping Mum out of mischief...

You have two computers and one printer...

Someone desperately wants to print something from a program on computer ONE... which does not have a printer... The program is not on computer TWO with the printer...

Do you need to move your printer to computer ONE? Or install the program on computer TWO?

Neither... if the program allows you to print to file. You can transport the file (via floppy) from computer ONE to computer TWO and print from there...

I couldn't work out how to do this from Windows 95, but DOS is handy for some things...

When I had the file called TEST.PRN
I went to DOS and typed:

COPY TEST.PRN LPT1

and Voila! How's that for printer sharing?!

As an e-pal said: Then you just print to a .PRN file and it will print from the computer that doesn't have the same software on it? That sounds like a neat way to share a printer! Way to go!!!!

Footnote to the printer story:

The other night Kate received a file attached to her email... the required program was on the 'other' computer... I saved the file to floppy and opened it on the 386...

Then I did a print to file... Chrissy (7) wanted the 386 and I said 'after I print this picture'... she asked where the printer was... and I pointed to the other room... Chrissy made some wavy movements with her hands... in the air.. going from one computer towards the other...

and I said something like... yeah, would be good... but... I'm putting it on the floppy and then I'll print it in the other room...

Mmmm... convenient... she said...
